The Bonnemie estate appears in charters as early as 1086, making it one of the island's oldest documented properties — already the most important on Oléron at the time, drawing its income from salt and wine. The château standing today is largely the result of a rebuilding campaign begun in 1694: a great central hall, outbuildings and a monumental gateway dated 1700, flanked by four 15th–16th century towers (two square, two round) roofed in slate. Its façades, roofs and interior — spiral staircase, panelled drawing room, monumental 17th-century fireplace, chapel in one of the towers — have been listed as a historic monument since 1981 and 1994.
