Fewer crowds, more calm, a sea still warm in September — and gentler rates than at the height of summer.
July and August have their charm, but also their crowds and their prices. June and September give you the best of the island without the downsides — long, bright days in June, sea water that's had all summer to warm up by September, beaches that empty out, and what many visitors describe as a late-September sweet spot: evenings finally cool enough to dine outside without sweltering, under a lingering sun.
In June, the island gets around 13.6 hours of daylight and temperatures of roughly 17-20°C, with just 24mm of rainfall spread over an average of 22 dry days. The sea already reaches 18.5°C. By September, the sea has had all summer to warm up — it peaks at 19.4°C, almost as warm as in July — with average rainfall of 53mm over 23 dry days. Two different profiles, but one thing in common: neither has the crowds of July-August.
This late-season stretch is exactly what many visitors are after: on the Atlantic coast, it isn't about blazing autumn colours like you'd find further north, but late-September days when the sun and the mild warmth linger on after everyone else has gone home — a still-warm sea, sunny terraces and empty beaches well into the month.
The island's big beaches, packed in August, go quiet again — plenty of room to spread a towel without a neighbour two feet away.
The heatwave peaks of July and August give way to pleasant temperatures, ideal for cycling, walking, or a nap in the garden without having to chase the shade.
All three houses move to mid-season rates from June through the end of September — the same garden, the same amenities, for less than in peak summer.
