Shore fishing and surfcasting: a beach all to yourself

Foraging for shellfish at low tide, surfcasting at first light — Île d'Oléron is as much for fishing as for sightseeing.

Just head down to the beach at low tide, rod or a simple rake in hand, and you'll understand why anglers come back to Île d'Oléron year after year. Shellfish at the ebbing tide, sea bass caught surfcasting on exposed beaches, silence and wide open sky — you don't have to go far to find yourself alone with the sea.

Two ways to fish on the island

Shore fishing

At low tide, clams, cockles and periwinkles can be gathered by hand or with a rake on the tidal flats. A family activity, open to everyone, timed to the tides.

Surfcasting

On the island's exposed beaches, sea bass is caught from the shore at dawn or dusk — quiet, solitary, often standing right in the water.

What you need to know

No licence is required for sea fishing, but since January 2026 anglers over 16 targeting certain regulated species such as sea bass must register online — it's worth checking the current rules before you head out.

Minimum sizes and quotas in Charente-Maritime

Recreational shore fishing is regulated to protect the resource. In Charente-Maritime, minimum catch sizes are set at 4 cm for clams, 2.7 cm for cockles, 4 cm for mussels and 5 cm for oysters. For clams, only a hand rake, clam knife or a simple spoon are allowed; for cockles, only a hand rake. The daily quota is 5 kg per person per day, all species combined — plenty for a seafood platter at dinner, without stripping the tidal flats bare.
